Time for a Change

As we stand at the tipping point of a transformative era for the maritime sector, fostering global consensus for a sustainable and resilient future is more critical than ever before. Climate change has already begun to leave a tangible impact on our lives, and addressing this issue is a pressing global priority. The potential mass resignation of seafarers and declining interest among future maritime workers, driven by growing inequalities and fears of uncertainty, could pose significant challenges moving forward, especially as the integration of automation and advanced technology continues to reshape the industry.

My Approach

Guided by the IMO Assembly and IMO Council, I am committed to the following:

I will foster an inclusive approach at the IMO, facilitating discussions with member States,
observer delegations, stakeholders, academia, civil society and the Secretariat. I will actively
seek collaboration with other international organizations such as the ITF, ICS, UN, ILO and
FAO.

I will engage the public through comprehensive information campaigns, highlighting the IMO’s successes in promoting shipping as a responsible, safe, efficient, and sustainable mode of transport for global trade.
I will emphasize the importance of technical cooperation programmes to improve compliance and implementation of IMO Conventions among member States by advocating for the development of innovative ideas to secure funding for these programmes. My experience at WMU and the ILO has demonstrated my ability in mobilizing resources for technical cooperation activities. Through collaboration with WMU and IMLI, I will continue to support the education and development of future maritime leader and policymakers. I will also work with IMO partners towards ensuring their long-term financial sustainability.
I will work on strengthening the Global Maritime Community by fostering a strong, united global maritime community which is built on trust, cooperation and shared responsibilities through continued international collaboration and dialogue. My ability in building global consensus is evident in the development and adoption of the MLC, 2006.
I will strive to develop a modern Global Maritime Accord by facilitating discussions and negotiations among member States, industry stakeholders and international partners to develop a shared vision for the maritime future for all. This vision will be grounded in the principles of social justice, environmental stewardship, and economic prosperity, ensuring that the maritime industry is sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
I believe that the IMO must play an ambitious and leading role in shaping a more prosperous and equitable maritime world for all. Coming from a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) myself, it will be my great honour to lead the Organization as its first female Secretary-General from a developing country. I pledge to work tirelessly to build consensus among member States and global partners, promote the adoption of best practices and cutting-edge technologies, and enhance the capacity of future maritime leaders through innovative educational and training programmes. Together, we can build a bright future charting the course for a safe, secure, efficient, environmentally sound and sustainable maritime sector
